Piano Practice Session 1

Authors

March 31, 2013 12:00 - 13:30 @ Ikebukuro

Today I joined a small piano performance practice session hosted by my piano school. There were only five participants, but it was a very stimulating experience because it was my first time playing in front of other people and listening to other students perform up close.

We had enough time to go around twice. During the first round I got nervous and blanked out for a moment while playing Bach, but on the second attempt I felt much more composed.

Playing a grand piano in a dimly lit room with a good atmosphere felt wonderful.

One of the older women participating played the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8, "Pathetique." The melody was so beautiful and poignant that I instantly fell in love with it. The way she played also felt deeply heartfelt, which left a strong impression on me.

People made mistakes here and there during their performances, but that made the whole event feel more human and sincere. It was really enjoyable. The next session will be in three months, and the one after that will be a recital in a hall, which I am already looking forward to.
